5. Coming Soon! – RFIDTags.com Mobile – global internet traffic being generated by mobile devices is sharply increasing.

A few years a go, the United States government required nearly all passports to have a computer chip with the passport holder’s personal information. This contains the name, nationality, gender, date of birth and place and a digitized photo of the passport holder. Allowing this to protect the cardholder and makes it more difficult for criminals to get away with tampering passports.

Like everything else, this brings up privacy issues.

With these passports, this exposes people’s identity to strangers. The State Department made security precautions to prevent this from happening. The RFID tags will use digital signatures to prevent tampering, and only when it is within inches of an RFID reader will the information be accessible.

These passports have a “multilayered approach” which protects privacy to reduce people from stealing data. This metallic “anitskimming material” is located in the front cover and spine of the book and prevents it from being read in the distance. However, because the digitized picture is required it helps to make it impossible for posers to make copies and forge someone’s identity.

The biggest downfall here with the RFID tags in the passports, is that the government, once again, has access to tracking your every move. Essentially with the passport being closed it supposedly cannot be read unless it is near a RFID reader, but once you come near a reader your information is handed over and you are being tracked.

Is this just another technology where the government is trying to track people? Or do you this is a necessity and not an invasion of privacy?

Recently, I came across a news article on the online Wall Street Journal that announced that Wal-Mart will soon track their clothing using RFID tags.

First, they plan to use RFID tags to track individual jeans and underwear to better control their inventory. Sometime this month they plan to place “removable smart tags” on each individual item and a hand-held scanner will be able to read it.

According to the report, if successful, the RFID tags will be placed on other products at more than 3,700 Wal-Mart stores. Wal-Mart being a leader in retail, some predict that other retail companies will follow in their footsteps.

Even though this seems to be a great technology and a way to save money, few bring up privacy questions. According to the WSJ article,

“While the tags can be removed from clothing and packages, they can’t be turned off, and they are traceable. Some privacy advocates hypothesize that unscrupulous marketers or criminals will be able to drive by consumers’ homes and scan their garbage to discover what they have recently bought.”

Another issue from the WSJ article,

“They also worry that retailers will be able to scan customers who carry new types of personal ID cards as they walk through a store, without their knowledge. Several states, including Washington and New York, have begun issuing enhanced driver’s licenses that contain radio- frequency tags with unique ID numbers, to make border crossings easier for frequent travelers.”

Will this give the store the ability to know a person’s identity when they enter the store?

However, Wal-Mart is requiring suppliers to add the tags to removable labels and NOT embedding them on to clothes. This will allow for those scares to be minimized, and they will also have signs, warning the people who are purchasing clothing, about the RFID tags.

Meridian Health operates five New Jersey hospitals, and has helped develop an active RFID tag that logs a patient’s pain at home and records the effectiveness of pain medications he or she takes, according to a recent article on RFIDJournal..

com How convenient would it be to have something that logs your pain and is able to tell which medications are more effective for your pain and which one’s are not?

This product is known as, Impak Health Journal for Pain, and is being tested by 22 patients. They’re using an “RFID-enabled cardboard foldout”; patients answer the questions that are then placed on an RFID reader.

This is an excellent way to reach out to patients while they are at home instead of actually coming to the hospital, daily. I think this is an excellent way to improve medications and better a patients needs.

Their plan for the future is to offer the journal to test blood for sugar or cholesterol levels and then make it available to hospital’s servers through an NFC reader.

In today’s society, everyone seems to be “busy”. With this advance technology, this device makes it capable for patients to be at home, and doctors to be at the hospital, but they can still monitor their patients.

In an article I recently read, Curves International, which is based in Waco, Texas, has over 10,000 clubs. In 2007, the company introduced CurvesSmart, which is an RFID-based system. This is designed to provide members with personal and immediate feedback during their training.

To activate the system, the member wears an RFID-embedded wristband and on each piece of equipment a RFID interrogator is attached. The wristbands have passive RFID tags, each costing $2.54.

Each wristband contains the member’s information from a fitness test that is required upon receiving the device. This helps the CurvesSmart system target the woman’s workout for her particular body. Finally, at the end of the workout, she then can measure her results and compare it to the previous workout.

Wouldn’t it be great to see after every workout that you are a step closer to accomplishing your goals?

With this RFID tag it seems that you are able to see your progress.

I recently read many articles and blogs regarding how much technology is affecting sports, but more importantly how RFID is implemented in sports. One blog about how much RFID is an essential in sports specifically caught my attention.

For example, running. Many people enjoy spending their time training for marathons, which requires a lot of running, and most of them want to better themselves after each marathon. In order to better themselves, they need to know their run times at the start, split and finish. With RFID, race timing is easier to accurately keep track of.

Of course, there are volunteers at hand with stopwatches or spotters watching a large clock, but both don’t accurately keep track of people’s individual time, especially when there are 5000 or more people racing.

Therefore, the alternative way to tracking someone’s time accurately is the RFID race timing, which is an adhesive strap with am embedded RFID tag that is attached to the back of the racer’s race number (this is an example of just how one race used this technology).

Volunteers now, only have to hand competitors a number with the timing device. Then, they take the strap off the number and attach it to their shoelaces. During their run, the computers and readers will do the rest.

This makes volunteer’s lives and runner’s lives less complex, but more accurate in timing their race.

According to a number of reports, “Apple has a patent for a touch screen RFID tag reader and is said to be testing an RFID-enabled iPhone currently”.

This would allow the RFID reader to be placed in the display panel and is enabled to read the RFID tags, which also allows the phone to be used beyond the consumer domain. If the iPhone becomes a RFID reader, this will allow the phone to interact with any object that is enabled.

Having the iPhone and using it as an RFID tag could delete some cards in your wallet. This could be used as a payment device, identity card, security device and more.

According to reports, this is already being implemented in Japan, “where the RFID Suica chip is installed in mobile phones”.

If this becomes a reality, the iPhone’s security will be enhanced. One report claims they could add fingerprints of the phone user meaning the phone will not be accessible for everyone.

Would you consider this a benefit in allowing the iPhone to withhold all your information, making it easily accessible?

In today’s society, construction companies and contractors are using RFID technology efficiently. When it is used correctly many companies are learning it “utilizes all your resources effectively.”

An example would be the RFID active tags. These tags can be interfaced to sense systems to add further capability to the tags data function.

Wireless networks within a place, allows real-time location of vital mobile assets. This then allows people to find equipment immediately and also improves the utilization of your assets and reducing theft.

These tags also provide measurements of “physical parameters such as, temperature, shock and GPS tracking.” These sensors can be used on buildings, dams, bridges and tunnels to warn engineers of failure.

This saves the expenses of sending out safety inspectors to monitor these places.

Since the construction industry has taken a new interest in RFID technology, companies are discovering this can be used for numerous things such as tracking, inventory management and equipment management. Just in 2 years this technology has improved drastically and has decreased costs fundamentally, for many companies.

Recently construction sites are using material tracking management systems to provide site managers the capability of seeking the construction progress and knowing what materials are delivered.

This is probable and cost effective by using RFID systems and then tagging all products. This guarantees more accurate numbers of the quantity of all things delivered and helps company’s monitor what is being completed on the construction site.

Can it be true? After all of the predictions of a hockey stick growth curve for RFID over the last 7-8 years finally materializing? It seems to me that the market will begin to fulfill some its early over-exaggerated growth predictions. I base this on several observations and various activities in different vertical markets.
1. Recently rfid inlay suppliers (Alien, UPM Raflatac, Avery Dennison) reported being out of stock of their most popular inlays – this is not business as usual.
2. Longer lead times for RFID readers from the top reader manufacturers with some big backorders
3. Baird reported that the Gen 2 Inlay market for 2010 would experience between 125% and 150% growth rate and the Gen 2 RFID market would experience in 2011 a 300% overall growth rate.
4. Boeing has recently partnered with Fujitsu to develop a RFID service to enable greater efficiency in aircraft maintenance operations. Boeing will begin to offer this service in the first quarter of 2012. This tells me when a company the size of Boeing decides to enter a market it must think that the market will be sizable in the near future
5. Retailers, including Wal-Mart, are investing in apparel item level tracking of products. This is an important shift in thinking. The key term here is “item level”. The retail industry has been slow to adapt RFID at the case and pallet level but seems ready to be much more aggressive in deploying at the item level. Chip, inlay, tag and smart label converters will finally be positively affected by the huge increase in the demand for item level RFID tags.
